Description

SHERPA is formed from a consortium of UK universities working to develop institutional repositories and investigating issues in the future of scholarly communication. It is developing open-access institutional repositories in universities to facilitate the rapid and efficient worldwide dissemination of research. SHERPA services and the SHERPA Partnership are both based at the Centre for Research Communications (CRC) at the University of Nottingham. The SHERPA services include OpenDOAR (a directory of academic open access repositories worldwide), RoMEO (a database of publisher’s permissions policies) and JULIET (information on the repository deposit rules demanded by the agencies funding research).

How the pathway is enabled: 

SHERPA implements a programme of advocacy activities within UK universities which promote the benefits to research communication of developing institutional repositories. In addition, OpenDOAR (http://www.opendoar.org/) is a SHERPA service providing an authoritative directory of academic open access repositories worldwide.

How the pathway is enabled: 

The SHERPA service RoMEO (http://www.sherpa.ac.uk/romeo/) is a database providing summaries of the permissions policies that are a part of each publisher's copyright transfer agreement. This information can provide the user with guidance on which publishers allow the author most flexibility in the deposit of research papers in repositories.

How the pathway is enabled: 

SHERPA develops and provides a range of resources aimed at stimulating the development of digital repositories in research institutions. The SHERPA service JULIET (http://www.sherpa.ac.uk/juliet/) provides information on the policies of the agencies funding research which govern the deposit of research outputs into repositories.
