SIST (Système d’Information Scientifique et Technique)

Description

SIST (Systeme d’Information Scientifique et Technique) is a cooperative project of the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs. It aims to open up African research and to apply science to African sustainable development. SIST has three components: the establishment of an information system in each country project partner; the creation of networks of expertise on priority issues; and training and transfer of expertise. It is intended primarily for researchers, laboratories, teachers and universities and encourages access to information produced in Africa and other continents, the dissemination of their research, and the formation of scientific teams on common themes.

Pathway(s) enabled
How the pathway is enabled:
SIST works to raise awareness of the importance of the digital capture and management of research information. SIST also works to raise the level of expertise in the management of research information in partner countries and organizations. Training in digitization and online publication methods has been carried out in a project in several African countries (organized by the Institute for Research and Development: IRD). Workshops on scanning were established in some universities and institutions and many electronic documents are now available online (see website http://www.beep.ird.fr/)
How the pathway is enabled:
SIST is a collaborative information platform which combines research information from partner countries and organizations and also in particular subject themes.
The SIST project provides a set of open source tools to create an information portal that can perform federated searches on various types of electronic resource (bibliographic data, repositories, scientific databases, forums, open archives, project databases, websites, RSS feeds, and so on). Some countries have set up this platform to provide access to both local and international information (Senegal: http://www.sist.sn/; Tunisia: http://www.sist-tunisie.rnu.tn/; Burkina Faso: http://sist-atelier.cirad.fr; and Algeria: http://portail-agrobiologie.ina.dz/.) A web form is available on these web sites to contact the webmaster.
Thematic networks of researchers use the SIST platform to share and make available information relating to their work (Biotechnologie végétale et sécurité: http://plateforme.sist-bvb.net; Valorisation des patrimoines numériques: http://plateforme.sist-digitafrica.net/; Épizooties et maladies émergentes et réémergentes: http://plateforme.sist-emer.net/; Technologies de l’information et de la communication dans l’enseignement et la recherche: http://plateforme.sist-ticer.net/)
Tool interfaces are multi-lingual but installation and use is in French
